Within Reach

The learnings from this week are extremely relevant and useful to my career path. In Wednesday’s in class activity, my group chose the work force environment, chemicals and consumption as the most important issues. Our industry is known for the poor working environments in developing countries. While they do provide a job for those individuals, they are not being treated properly and children and even being forced to work. Other examples that were provided in Fashioning Sustainability, like animal welfare, care, trade and other areas are also very important but we can only focus on a select few things. As potential future leaders in this industry, it is our job to find better solutions to our current practices. If we do not make the necessary changes, like replenishing our resources, finding alternative processes, make longer lasting materials, and recycling anything possible, our society will eventually be like that of Easter Island. Many may think that idea is far-fetched, but I believe it is possible. Our environment can only handle so much. The natural resources we have available to us are being used up at an incredibility quick rate. Yes, we can replant trees, but they do not grow at the rate in which they are being used.
My “moment” from this week was how many resources are being used when we care of our products. I never even considered these issues. This can be from washing, drying, and ironing our clothing, towels or other home goods, to the chemicals in the cleaning products we are using in our homes, or work spaces.
After learning about these topics I would like to learn more about ways we can create more efficient washing machines, dryers, and detergent. Also how we can educate consumers about these new technologies and how they can be used in homes.

I do not see points from the readings integrated here? Also, this provides a summary of some of your key learnings, but does not provide an adequate reflection on what it means to you. For example, you say,”Many may think that idea is far-fetched, but I believe it is possible.” Why do you think this is possible? What experience or other learning makes you think that?

Another example… you say “My “moment” from this week was how many resources are being used when we care of our products. I never even considered these issues. This can be from washing, drying, and ironing our clothing, towels or other home goods, to the chemicals in the cleaning products we are using in our homes, or work spaces.” Why was this a moment for you? Was it because it became personal? Why was it shocking?
