Merchandising by Empathizing

Of the articles read this week, “A Framework For Empathy In Design: Stepping Into and Out of the User’s Life” was the one that resonated with me the most. I am a merchandising student because I enjoy fashion but have a passion for great customer service. In providing good customer service you must listen to the needs of the consumer. The article addresses this as important as well, but says you cannot stop there. The key to empathizing with the customer is being able to see life from their perspective; “walk in their shoes”. Though the article is specifically targeting design, this applies to merchandising and becoming more sustainable.
Making changes to become more sustainable would be more successful if the changes are still meeting the consumer’s needs. A key to doing this is empathizing with your target market. There is a lot of planning and research that goes into change, but empathizing with the customer is not something to be overlooked.
