My Sustainability Journey

Wow, this course has completely changed me and my way of thinking. Before this class sustainability was just a term to me. Sure, I recycled things when I could, and I would be conscious of the amount of energy I was using but thats as far as it went.

I can now say that sustainability is a way of life for me. Sustainability has even made its way into my personal life. I find myself always teaching my friends and family about the lessons I learned in class that week and what they can do to be more sustainable. They are honestly pretty sick of me, but it is a passionate subject to me and I want to share that with others.

I have learned about so many things that I have never even heard of before. My two favorite topics were empathic design and biomimicry. I still find myself getting on to investigate biomimicry further. There is so much great work being done by individuals and I would love for it to be adapted into mainstream society. Some of the topics do not seem like they would be hard to implement if corporations would just use them.

Another thing I really enjoyed about the course was watching the 11th hour. It was a really great movie (and not just because of Leonardo) and it was a great movie to end the semester with. It really just drove home everything we learned about and how much more we need to do. It was interesting to hear so much valuable information from people who truly understand. w

I am near graduating and am currently on the hunt for a job, and when I look at companies I now look at what they are doing to me more sustainable. I want to work with a sustainable company that is leading the industry in sustainability instead of a company ignoring it.

That is how I will raise awareness AND modify behavior. I was unsure how to modify behavior at the beginning of this course but now I see how it can be done. I may not end up working for a company who is already using sustainable practices, but that is my opportunity to teach them. It won’t happen overnight, but if I start doing things and others start doing those things then that is a start.
