Final Blog

After taking this class, I can say without a doubt in my mind that I am leaving a much more knowledgeable and aware person about the sustainability issues present in today’s society. Coming into this class, I couldn’t even think of a decent definition for the word sustainability. Now, after the semester is over, my definition of sustainability would have to be the awareness and actions taken by individuals or groups of individuals to not only avoid harming but help the earth and the environment. Sustainable design is a not only products that are environmentally friendly, but a way of life that is lived by the designer. At the beginning of the course, I was not aware of the extent to which there is a lack of sustainability in our society, nor the amount of endless options and ways to go about sustainable design. One of the design theories that really stood out to me as I reflect on the course is bio mimicry. The idea of looking to nature for design inspiration is something I have never thought of before. Now, every time I am outside for example, I am constantly seeing things and thinking of ways that could be applied to a sustainable design. One of the ted talks we watched, the speaker talked about how a spider’s web is stronger than Teflon, and is made without any harm to the earth. Who would think that a small spider’s web is stronger than something that takes a very intense process to make. Now if only, ideas like that can be thought of and applied to all different products and industries. I learned that bringing awareness to the issue is probably the most important and impactful thing that can be done. When people know better, they do better, and right now I think there isn’t enough talk about sustainability, or actual changes people can be making to make a difference. After this class, I would like to learn more about ways that I can become more sustainable in every aspect of my life. Whether it is at my home, at my work, or just day-to-day life, I think I can make changes that can help the environment more than I am currently hurting it. This class truly went above and beyond my expectations. I learned more than I ever thought, and realize now that there is much more to sustainability than one might originally think.
