Before entering this course my general thought of sustainability was that it was a way to help the planet. That it was something good and needed to be done by everyone. Additionally, my general idea of sustainability was that it coincided with recycling. We were recently talking about the concept of biomimicry, which to me is essentially learning from the environment and creating a more sustainable design from that. I think the idea is so genius, valuable and often overlooked.
In class we did The Wildest Thing activity where we pushed ourselves to think about our dreams and gripes. Something that I wrote down and that really interests me is the idea that people should fix their clothing more. To avoid throwing them out, buying new clothes and to really get the life-span out of an item. I know that Patagonia (a company that I love) encourages their customers to reuse their clothing and to not buy what they do not need. Only if the other thousands of companies looked at their business that way, instead of just for profit and not for the environment. I’m excited to learn more as the class precedes and how I can incorporate sustainability into my life more.
