Last week in class, we did our second design slam. I did mine over the prompt of Meryl Streep. According to the prompt, Meryl Streep was diagnosed with stage one dementia. She enjoyed cooking and wanted to be able to cook safely and comfortably in her own home without her children worrying about her. I came up with the design to incorporate a stove that would automatically shut off when it wasn’t in use; it had a sensor to determine if she was using it or not. The oven would shut off automatically after the food was fully cooked and would alert her as well. I installed a sink with a touch sensor on/off and heat/cool. I also made sure that the cabinets had slow-close hinges that automatically close when left open so she wouldn’t hurt herself. I wanted to make sure she couldn’t hurt herself so her family wasn’t as worried about her.
Thinking back on it now, I wouldn’t have changed anything I did. I think she would have been safe in the kitchen I created for her, and it was going to be sustainable.
