As i reflect on my last week in sustainability, I look at the whole semester and think about how far I have come in my sustainability journey. To me, sustainability is simply the idea of longevity. When looking at those two words right next to each other it might seem totally unrelated, but I have found throughout the semester the length of a product, building, garment, etc. is the sole purpose of sustainable design. At the beginning of the semester it was difficult for me to wrap my head around sustainability because it is truly a vast field. But now finishing the class, I am finding sustainability to be a very simple concept. Create objects, places, stuff that LASTS with products that LAST and materials have previous have been used therefore LAST. Longevity, longevity, longevity.
To me realizing that longevity is the root of sustainability was the largest epiphany I had all semester. Furthermore, all of the principles of sustainability were interesting to me and were very eye opening. Knowing what I known now, I would like to learn more about how to implement these sustainability principles in my future career. As a class we have said this many times before about separating the different options in DHM for a sustainability class because then it would be centered around the options. We would learn more about how to implement these skills and principles into every day life.
