At the beginning of the semester I defined sustainability as a way to find a solution to a problem that isn’t harmful to the environment and to be ecofriendly. I think my definition is accurate but at the same time sustainability is so much more than just being eco friendly and recycling. There are so many different aspects to it that this semester has helped me learn about. I never really realized how bad the fashion industry is when it comes to being sustainable. Especially after doing my LOLA show on Patagonia it made me realize that we really need to do something about all the clothing waste we produce. We are the people that can make a difference in our world and we need to start stepping up and make the difference and make our world a more sustainable place.
A concept that I have really enjoyed learning about this semester and will stick with me is Biomimicry. Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time tested patterns and strategies. Biomimicry is a concept that kind of blows my mind. It’s so awesome how people can come up with inventions by being inspired by something in nature. I would have never thought about this concept if I hadn’t taken this class. I don’t feel like it’s a very popular concept in our world right now but It’s something that should be used more and something that can really make a difference. There were so many great examples about Biomimicry this semester but one of my favorite examples I found was that people were inspired by a mosquito and how even though it takes blood out of your body you don’t even feel it. So they came up a needle that was inspired by a mosquito that you couldn’t even feel when injected into your skin. Biomimicry could be used in all aspects of design but I think it could really be used in the medical field and could really improve it.
I’ve honestly learned so much this semester and I can’t wait to be an activist and continue on my sustainable journey. I never expected to learn this much about our world and all the different concepts that help make it more sustainable. Honestly I didn’t even know why my major was required to take this class at the beginning but now I can see how beneficial it was to me and how it can help me improve the fashion field as I get older. I think all students should take this class. It’s made me grow appreciation for the outdoors and nature when I have never been an outdoorsy person before. This class has made me want to make an impact on the world and to make a change in my life to be a more sustainable person. I can’t wait to share my knowledge with other people and hope to help them on their sustainable journey. I can’t wait to make a difference!
