As I previously stated in my last blog, at the beginning of this course I defined sustainability as designing in a way to not harm the future. I still agree with that but I am now open to so many more different possibilities. One of the concepts that has stood out to me the most was biomimicry and biophilic design. I have never really heard of biophilic design before but once we talked about it, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head.
I also had never really considered that empathic design could go hand in hand with sustainability. I am not sure why I had never connected the two concepts. I think in the future my career will include empathic design because I want to help people. That is one of the best ways I will be able to contribute my skill set.
Before this class I was already interested in sustainable design but now I know that I will take this with me as I move forward. I learned more than I thought I would during this course and I would not change it. Also, in my last blog I had mentioned how this has been affecting me for a while. Ever since I started working in retail at the age of 16 I have been outraged at the amount of waste I noticed in the industry. “Fast Fashion” is something I do not agree with and these feelings have been very hard on me mentally because designing has been something I’ve always wanted to do. I am happy I have taken this course because I have been opened up to ways I can pursue a design career without the guilt. I definitely think I will be working for a company that practices sustainability because I do not think I would be truly happy otherwise.
