Week 7 of class we talked more about the biomimicry application, the use of nature as its guide to design as we wrapped up this part of sustainability. Nature principles says that the nature runs on sunlight, uses only the energy it needs, fits form to function, and it recycle every thing etc. These are all important parts of biomimicry, it supports the transition towards a more sustainable nation. Nature reacts to how we treat it and if we treat it well then we will be able to thrive of the ecosystems indefinitely. Nature hold to key to all thing sustainable and if we simply just listen to the environment then work with us to create the reassures that we need to survive. There are many sustainable principles that relate to merchandising. Reducing risk such as child labor, product recalls, and going form farm to factory for traceability can help merchandising companies become more sustainable.  Ensuring supply resiliency long-term, so that products can last beyond their lifecycle and reduce dependencies on volatile commodities. Identifying new opportunities that can ensure better product quality, introduce new markets and reduce cost. All of these merchandising principles are to help generate a more sustainable industry so that products can be made and used in proper way without causing any damage to the ecosystem. A SWOT analysis compares a companies strengths, weakness, opportunity, and treats. The SWOT analysis when comparing sustainable and non-sustainable companies conflict in many ways. While sustainable companies’ strength is using the thee r’s principles, their weakness may be that they are less know when compared to brands like Forever 21 or Wet Seals. Although, becoming more widely know can be seen as an opportunity, a threat will be that there is strong competition within the merchandising field because other popular brands that are not sustainable have a big audience. They can go back and forth because a lot of established brands have great sales and aren’t concerned with the environment. While, sustainable companies are great at being eco-friendly they many problems may arise because bigger brand might overshadow their great efforts to help save the earth. Environmental-awareness signage is stores and eco-packaging is another way that merchandising companies can become more sustainable. Environmental-awareness signage in store is used to enforce a sustainable lifestyle for their customers, having signs in dressing room or around the store to remind people to be cautions of the things they do to the environment. The eco-packaging is a greener approach to sending packages, instead of having packages that are over sized or non-biodegradable.  Eco-packaging such as mushroom packaging is cheaper and more sustainable solution to packaging difficulties.

I enjoyed watching all of the LOLA show presentations they were very insightful. I learned a lot about sustainable practices during every presentation. The merchandising industry is doing a lot new things to become more sustainable. A big problem that we face within our ecosystem is the pollution of the air, it causes harm not only to our bodies but to the environment. Catalytic Clothing brings together chemistry and design to help purify the air. Catalytic clothing is another form of biomimicry where the clothing is used to mimic the lights to break down air-borne pollution into harmless chemicals into the air. I learned that H&M does practice sustainability, I always considered them be a retail store that mass produced and not environmental friendly. Their “bring it recycle it” campaign they are encouraging people the bring in their old clothes so that they can be repurposed into something new. I thought that was a great idea and great way to help close the loop to turn the old clothes into new fabrics. Reformation is another sustainable store that stood out to me, I’m interested in seeing how much they grow over the course of time. They have factories in L.A, use all virgin material to produce clothing, recycle 75% of waste and they have onsite training for their workers. All we great additive to class discussions and showing just how many sustainable practices there are in the merchandising industry, it can help contribute to the longevity of the environment.
