Sustainability and sustainable design to me is designing with the needs of others in mind, whether it’s about protecting the environment while designing or designing for a specific demographic. I feel that throughout the semester I have learned more about sustainability and sustainable design, though I view these concepts in the same way. In the first blog I described sustainability as “designing in a way that does not harm the environment. Keeping the possible impact on nature in mind while designing and innovating is a part of being sustainable. Sustainability is also designing with people’s individual needs in mind.” I now know more about sustainability concepts such as empathic design and biophilia.
I have learned a lot in this class over the course of the semester. One of the most important things that I will remember is how unsustainable the fashion industry is sometimes and how people are working to change it. Biomimicry is one of my favorite things that we discussed in class. I liked learning about how people designed new things based on aspects found in nature. Biophilia was also an interesting concept because having a connection to nature can improve someone’s wellbeing. Empathic design is something that I will probably use in the future because it involves designing for a specific group.
Empathic design is very interesting to me and I hope to learn more about it in the future. I would have liked to learn more about how I can be sustainable on my own since it is something I already try to do. At the beginning of the semester I found out my carbon footprint value was too high because of my high electricity use. In the future, I would like to learn how to use less electricity. Closing feedback loops was an interesting topic that we learned about and I would like to learn more about the industries that are working towards this. Overall, Sustainability was an interesting class and I would like to continue to learn more about sustainability and sustainable design.
