A Focus on Systems–Blog 9

The TED Talk presentation by Tim Brown had a key point that struck me as something worth attempting to incorporate into every design project and it was to take the focus off of the product itself and onto the system that the product would fit into. The approach is much more holistic than what normally occurs in the the design world. Rather than solving a single problem with a single solution it forces the designer to look at the problem, the causes of the problem, solutions to the problem, the solutions affects on the problem and other potential problems that could be caused by the solution, and finally how to create a system that solves all of the problems without creating new ones. Mr. Brown also talked about how we should start a design with a technology focus, but rather with a focus on people and culture. Tim Brown advocates for designing for the big picture and not just a singular problem.
